Non-Profit Mission
The Herd & Factory
When we herd together, we are a force to reckon with. We pool for safety. We mirror each other. We co-create. And then we witness each other's becoming.
The Herd & Factory is the non-profit heart of Liquid Lemn — born from a simple truth: alone, we survive. Together, we become.
The herd is the oldest form of collective intelligence. Animals herd for safety, for warmth, for direction. When you are queer in East Africa — or anywhere the system wasn't built for you — herding is not metaphor. It is survival. It is strategy. It is how you pool resources, negotiate with power, and create the space to exist on your own terms.
The factory is what happens when the herd decides to produce. Not just to gather, but to make. To take the collective energy of safety and resonance and turn it into something tangible — garments, skills, programmes, careers, lives that are self-sustaining. The factory is where ideas become livelihoods.
And between the herd and the factory is the space we care about most: becoming. The journey of watching someone who arrived uncertain leave as themselves. The moment a queer kid discovers they can cut a pattern. The moment a woman artisan trains someone new. The moment the collective witnesses a person individuating — not leaving the herd, but growing within it.
We herd. We produce. We witness each other's becoming.
The framework
Kundi
The Herd
When we herd together, we are a force. The Herd is the collective — pooling for safety, mirroring each other, learning from each other's becoming journeys. A space where queer lives find resonance, where vulnerability becomes strength in numbers.
Kiwanda
The Factory
The Factory is where the collective produces. Where we ideate, co-create, and make. Where pooled wisdom becomes tangible — garments, skills, programmes, livelihoods. The output of what happens when people who understand each other's struggle decide to build together.
Kuwa
The Becoming
The journey doesn't end at making. We herd, we produce, and then we individuate — witnessing each other's becoming. The Herd & Factory exists so that every person who passes through it leaves more fully themselves.
What the factory produces
Programmes built by the herd, for the herd.
Skills Transfer
Workshops in pattern-making, textile design, and garment construction — taught by our women artisans. The skills that built our brand, pooled and shared freely. Because knowledge hoarded is knowledge wasted.
Design for Impact
What can design really do to impact lives? Residencies, mentorships, and collaborative projects where queer creatives answer that question together — not in theory, but in fabric, in form, in practice.
Safe Herd Spaces
Gathering spaces — physical and digital — where queer makers mirror each other, share resources, negotiate with systems together, and find the safety that isolation denies. The herd protects.
Creative Livelihoods
Building pathways from craft to career. The Factory side — turning collective skill into individual livelihood. So that every queer maker who passes through can sustain themselves through their own hands.
How it's funded
A portion of every Liquid Lemn sale goes into The Herd & Factory reserve — pooled, protected, and growing until we can implement these programmes at scale. We build openly. We report transparently.
01
Every Sale Pools
A portion of every purchase flows into the reserve. The herd grows with every garment.
02
The Reserve Builds
Funds accumulate until programme-launch thresholds are reached. Tracked openly.
03
The Factory Activates
Workshops, residencies, safe spaces, and livelihoods roll out — by and for queer creatives across East Africa.
Join the Herd
Build this with us.
The Herd & Factory is pre-launch. We are actively looking for partners — foundations, impact funds, cultural institutions, and individuals — who understand that collective action is the most powerful design tool we have.
We're looking for:
- Funding partners — grants, sponsorships, or impact investment to accelerate the factory's activation
- Programme partners — organisations working in queer rights, creative education, or artisan development across East Africa
- Mentors & facilitators — designers, makers, educators who want to teach, guide, and witness becoming
- Safe space partners — venues for workshops, residencies, and gatherings in Nairobi, Amsterdam, or beyond
If this resonates — even if you're not sure exactly how — reach out. The herd grows one conversation at a time.
“We herd together. We produce together. We negotiate with the system together. And then we witness each other becoming — not leaving the herd, but growing within it.”
